The sound of falling water woke me from a sated, black sleep, and I rolled over in bed to see Slade’s spot empty beside me. The room was city dark—the lights outside providing enough filter that I could make out lumps of furniture in the room.

I had to blink a few times before I understood the falling water was the shower; a crack of light peeked from underneath the closed bathroom door. It took me even longer to register the few flashes to my right. Three short bursts of white. Slade’s phone on his nightstand flickered with a message alert.

My head still on my pillow, I looked at it.

I sat up, the covers falling to my waist. The screen, once bright in its allure, had gone dark.

Before I could give myself any time to second-guess my actions, I clawed across the bed until I reached the nightstand and felt the coolness of his phone in my palm.

He locked his phone with a passcode, not because of me but because it could easily fall into the wrong hands.

I didn’t dwell on how that could be interpreted as I punched in his code: 0-9-2-7. The month and day of our anniversary.

I read the incoming text, and not for the first time, felt foolish and trite immediately upon reading.

It was from Jimmy, his agent, asking Slade to call him tomorrow about potential endorsement deals since they didn’t get to speak about it earlier due to Slade rushing out.

His cell fell from my fingers, landing on the covers with a swish against the fabric. Listening to the spray and splashes of Slade’s shower, I stared at it as if it was a weapon to be used against me. I stared and I thought. Thought hard. Told myself not to pick up that phone and scroll through his messages. I trusted him. I had to have faith in him in order for this relationship to move forward.

Although it was clear our core was shaken, and it made sense to check his phone to reaffirm that center. To gain back what Reagan had taken away and what Nate had made frail—both of which I allowed to happen. I wanted my strength back. I wanted my stability back.

I picked up the phone and unlocked it again.

For ten minutes, I found nothing. Just texts from teammates and college friends, emails from coaches, spam mail, parent mail, and an email from his two little brothers about when Slade would star in a video game. All innocent and all made me feel like the devil. All made me turn into this insecure, jealous, green monster bound for hell until I found it.

He’d deleted it from his email, but the thing with email deletions was while people always made sure it was out of their inbox and trash, inevitably they managed to overlook the sent folder.

Slade was one of those people.

It was a picture of Reagan, naked but for her burgundy sheets displayed artfully around her in folds resembling a Greek gown just under her breasts.
